A common problem with elective monarchy is the actual electors of the game. A member of your dynasty could be an ideal ruler, but may or may not be voted in. Vassals will always vote for someone with their culture, so granting a duchy to a foreigner is usually a problem, they will vote for themselves or someone else of their culture.

Crusader Kings 2 Council Guide - The third entry in our crash course in being a medieval monarch introduces you to the council, what they can do for you, and Crusader Kings 3 has changed a lot from the last title which released all the way back in 2012. One of the biggest departures is succession laws. No longer can you rush to Primogeniture, ensuring a single heir rule for years to come.

Part 1: Understanding Imperial Elective The nice thing about having an elective monarchy (which Denmark has by default) is that the dukes are allowed to vote for the heir and since I'm the king my vote wins out against a tie and since I have all the duchies accept one, I'm the kingmaker. Obviously this only really works when you have a relatively small demesne. So if you only have one kingdom, don't make it elective. Instead, make your duchies elective and vote for the person who will naturally inherit your kingdom. On the other hand, if you have two kingdoms, you can make both of them elective and all titles underneath both will ignore partition.

The current ruler always gets a vote, and also breaks ties. Succession voting is a feature of six succession methods: Elective gavelkind, Tanistry, Eldership, Feudal elective, Princely elective, and Imperial elective. The succession law determines the voters, the possible candidates, and even how AI voters evaluate candidates.

So you can just choose your successor. It is also fine when you are starting out and have no vassals for the same reason. Once you get big enough there are multiple vassals that can vote though I can't stand it. 2013-05-25 Elective Monarchy is the best succession law imo. You can vote for the children with the best education and traits and it only can become risky when you are ruling an empire or your dukes hate you. To avoid that, make children have grey eminence education and 20+ diplo and problem solved!
