ERTMS is an international standard programme created to develop a common interoperable platform for railways and signalling systems. Interoperability is achieved when a system is able to operate together with other systems of different origins with predefined limits [1]. The main objectives of interoperability are based on the need
The heart of any signalling system is the interlocking of signalling assets with one another, preventing conflicting or unsafe train movement. Interlockings were introduced in the UK following the Regulation of Railways Act of 1889 and range from the earliest mechanical variants, through a variety of electro-mechanical and electrical relay interlocking, up to modern automated electronic systems.
The system is based on the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) signalling standard. Instead of using the standard balises (electronic beacons) along the rail bed to determine the train location, the 3InSat system uses the GNSS Location Determination System (LDS) designed and developed by Ansaldo STS, which is is compliant with existing rail safety standards. The ERTMS / ETCS standard (European Rail Traffic Management System / European Train Control System), is to be considered among the most significant innovations introduced in the European railway sector wich is also generating enormous interest throughout the entire world. The new signalling systems will cause fewer delays, give the opportunity for higher speed and more trains.

Interlocking. Interlocking is not an ERTMS component, but it plays an essential role in the signalling system. As a simple definition to the new signalling standard, the following formula is used: ERTMS = ETCS + GSM-R. The former element provides the train control as such while the latter element is responsible for mobile communication during the train operations.

Class B systems are legacy signalling systems, that often need to co-exist with ERTMS in some countries. These Class B systems are another bottleneck for the global ERTMS rollout, as they make ERTMS installations more complex, more expensive and more difficult to get approved by the safety authorities.

It is also able to manage the transmission of selected trackside data and communicate with adjacent RBCs. Interlocking. European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Instead of lineside signals, a computer in the driver’s cab controls the speed and movement of the train, whilst taking account of other trains on the railway. Installing ERTMS across the country as signalling becomes life-expired will save an estimated 40 per cent over conventional systems.
However, it is a very simplified point of view on the ERTMS. The European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is an initiative backed by the European Union to enhance cross-border interoperability and the procuremen

Therefore, the ERTMS L3 Regional system represents a step forward that goes well beyond the digitalisation of rail signalling: it addresses a new way of thinking about railway operations, whilst maintaining the safety standards guaranteed by the most advanced train protection system available on the market, reducing costs and complexity at the same time.
